How do you remove mold from a potted houseplant w/o harming the plant or roots?

I have two african violets that are potted and kept indoors. Recently I've begun to notice that whitish mold is growing on the surface of the soil on one plant, and yellowish/goldish mold is growing on the surface of the other plant. Is there anything I can do to kill the mold without harming my plants or their roots?
